Santino appears in Tales of Monkey Island as a member of the Democratically United Brotherhood of the Manatee Interior. When "Lair of the Leviathan"'s story action begins, Santino is already dead, and he is only ever seen as a clean skeleton. In his life, however, he was Coronado De Cava's most trusted and useful crew member, as well as the only one who could speak to manatees and understand their language, with help from the Marquis De Singe and his manatee language book. The other members of the Brotherhood do not appear to notice that he is dead, and they still count his vote when meetings are called. When Guybrush replaces Santino's skull with Murray, he is, in a way, given life, and immediately turns on Guybrush. Guybrush convinces Murray to give him his vote by assuring him the initiation will be full of vicious torture. After selling the group out and imprisoning them, Guybrush's only option for getting them to talk is to "kill" Santino, removing Murray and flinging him into the ocean.
In "Rise of the Pirate God", Santino's cenotaph is next to Noogie's grave in the Gateway of the Crossroads and reads,
- All hail Santino, brilliant and brave.
- A pirate too good to be stuck in a grave.
Personality
Santino, being nothing more than a skeleton when the story begins, is completely immobile and silent. When his skull is replaced with Murray, however, he becomes raucous and rude (although still unable to move). The members of the Brotherhood never mention seeing a difference in Santino's behavior. De Cava's file trunk describes Santino as "What a dish!" and lists many considerable accomplishments: he was apparently handy at all things to do with the sea, at speaking to manatees and as a pastry chef. He even loves bugs, as Moose reveals.
Moose is especially close with Santino and votes with him on all Brotherhood matters.
Trivia
- In the PS3 version of "Lair of the Leviathan", if Guybrush can get Santino (actually Murray in disguise), Moose, and the other members of the Brotherhood to recruit him by a unanimous vote, the player is awarded a "There Is a Brotherhood of Jerks" silver trophy in the PlayStation Network Trophy Achievements; and if he manages to defeat them (sans Murray) and De Cava, the reward is a "Feed the Beast" gold trophy. In "Rise of the Pirate God", Guybrush can read Santino's cenotaph along with Noogie's gravestone and all the other gravestones (including his own) in the Crossroads Gateway to earn the player a "Grave Ribber" bronze trophy (a spoof on the words "grave robber").
