Name

Ozzie's name is comprised of two distinct words. While Ozzie is a real name (a common nickname for a person named Oswald or Osbourne) it may also be a lead-on from Aussie meaning Australian. His surname, Mandrill, is a species of primate closely related to baboons and drills. The selection of surname is somewhat odd as the species is a native of Africa and not Australia. However, this name does allow for the pun off of Ozymandias, as shown when Mandrill paraphrases the famous poem late in the game.

M.O.

Ozzie takes over businesses by challenging their owners to rounds of insult-games (such as Insult Swordfighting) which he always wins due to his use of obscure and bizarre insults that no-one can counter. In the game, the player can even challenge Ozzie into a swordfight on Lucre, but will never be able to beat him.

Role in games

Some 20 years before the games, Ozzie was a down-on-his-luck business man. While at a bar one night he ran into H.T. Marley, a competitor in the America's Cup. To cheer Ozzie up Herman told him stories about the various wonders of the Caribbean, such as Big Whoop, The Three-Headed-Monkey and the Ultimate Insult. With this knowledge Ozzie began to slowly plan his hostile take-over of the entire Caribbean. He also decided to stop Marley from winning the race by bumping his boat into a whirlpool.

Years later Ozzie apparently made his way to Monkey Island. This occurred sometime after The Curse of Monkey Island as LeChuck has already been defeated and was now laying dormant beneath the mountain of ice. It was never specified how Ozzie freed LeChuck, but afterwards he gladly decided to help Ozzie further his plan in order to get the two things he always wanted, Elaine as his wife and Guybrush... dead.

Ozzie began to buy up most of the land around Jambalaya Island and Booty Island and was also capable of taking over great amounts of Mêlée Island as well. Ozzie and Guybrush eventually meet when he frames Guybrush for the robbery of the Second Bank of Lucre. Ozzie tries to solve the mystery of the ultimate insult using the Marley Heirlooms but is unable to. Guybrush tricks him and is able to follow Ozzie to Pegnose Pete's Booty Showcase.

Ozzie steps out of the spotlight until the end of Act II when it is revealed that LeChuck was working for Ozzie. Relieving Guybrush of the pieces of the Ultimate Insult and stranding Guybrush on Monkey Island once more he begins to plan the mass annihilation of the pirate-populace of the Caribbean. He and LeChuck are unable to get the Ultimate Insult working, but as Elaine is captured they realise that the Gubernatorial Seal of Mêlée Island is the last piece needed to make the insult work. After testing the Insult on Pegnose Ozzie turns to his Ultimate Insult Amplifier, but it has at this point been sabotaged by Guybrush.

Ozzie nearly manages to use the insult on Guybrush and Elaine when LeChuck, now in the form of a giant statue, interrupts him. LeChuck captures Elaine and Ozzie, but Ozzie manages to take control of him with the Ultimate Insult. LeChuck then does battle with the Giant Monkey Robot. During battle LeChuck is tricked into smashing Ozzie and the Ultimate Insult and the resulting blast of Voodoo energy destroys them both.
