The Idol of Many Hands or fabulous idol is a heavy statuette that Guybrush must steal in order to complete the Thieving Trial in The Secret of Monkey Island. The idol belongs to Governor Elaine Marley and was kept in her mansion on Mêlée Island. The many anti-theft devices protecting it include gophers, a funny little man, a yak with wax lips, a rhino, and a heavily-armed clown. Guybrush can get a file from inside a piece of carrot cake from Otis which he can use to shave the rhinoceros toenails and open the Idol's case.
Sheriff Fester Shinetop will try to stop Guybrush from leaving with the Idol, but Elaine will defend him. Later the Sheriff will tie the Idol to Guybrush's ankle and throw him into the bay outside of town, but the water is shallow and Guybrush can simply pick the idol up and walk to safety.
